Salt Lake City rightly deserves the moniker "Crossroads of the West", it's an oasis of a city in the midst of many varying degrees of terrain; snowy mountain, arid valley, sandy desert, and yes, salt lakes! The city was founded by Brigham Young, leader of the Mormon religious movement. Sir Richard Burton, the English Explorer who traveled by stagecoach in 1860 from Saint Joseph, Missouri, over the Pony Express Trail to Salt Lake City, wrote his interpretation of the west- it's his descriptions that gives us a certain flavor of an accurate and vivid account of life in those days.
