Horton, Kansas

Horton Kansas is a great example of modern Euro/Native coexistence; after the war of 1812, the Kickapoo tribe was moved from what is now Indiana to what is now Missouri, eventually selling lands for reservations in Kansas, then splintering into Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. Today, one of the largest communities of Kickapoo live close to the city of Horton, one of the last Pony Express stops before Atchinson. Today both cultures live with much admired mutual cultural respect. Horton threw a great memorial event for the Sesquicentennial Mochila exchange, tasty potato salad!
