Fort Kearney, Nebraska

Increasing emigration west in the 1840's precipitated an increase of military posts across the plains to protect the pioneers. One of first posts to go up in Nebraska territory was Fort Kearny; established in the spring of 1848 near the head of Grand Island along the Platte River by Lieutenant Daniel P. Woodbury.

Today, you can visit the authentic and educational Fort Kearney Museum and see a slice of the past and The Great Platte River Road Archway, one of the most interesting historic monuments in the country. Located over I-80 in Nebraska, you can literally walk through the dioramas of American History showcasing it's devlopment of communication and technology through the decades since the Pony Express.
